On-street electric vehicle charging points planned for Woking

by willforster on 16 September, 2020

Surrey County Council is set to install on-street electric vehicle charging points in Woking.

The Council agreed yesterday to create 20 on-street parking bays, spread across 5 locations in Woking, especially for the purpose of enabling electric cars to charge up their batteries.

Church Street East, Maybury Road, Montgomery Road and Oriental Road in Woking and Madeira Road in West Byfleet have been chosen as the locations for on-street electric vehicles charging points.  Two 22kW fast charging units will be installed at each site, giving capacity for four cars to charge simultaneously.

I am pleased that the County Council agreed to create Woking’s first on-street electric vehicle charging points.  Once the Council has gone through the legal process for designating these bays for electric charging, the facilities will be installed for local residents and visitors to the town to use.

We must do more to encourage electric car ownership.  But for many people, especially those living in or near Woking town centre who do not have a private driveway or garage, electric vehicles are not a viable option.  That is why creating these on-street electric charging points is so important.

Is the plan to roll this out to surrounding areas? I live in a flat in Byfleet so an electric car isn’t an option for me at the moment.

These on-street charging points are a trial, if they are going to be successful anywhere in Surrey – it will surely be in and around Woking town centre. Once they have worked here, they can be rolled out elsewhere.

Roughly one year ago Woking Council undertook to install on- street charging points, mostly to cater for persons who did not have private driveways or garages and therefore the opportunity to install a private charge point. Have the charge points been installed?
