Development proposed for Egley Road

by willforster on 21 March, 2022

There are plans to build almost 100 properties and a care home on former Green Belt land off Egley Road in Mayford.

The land to west of Egley Road between Mayford and Woking was recently released from Green Belt by both the Government’s Planning Inspector and Woking Borough Council. As a result, Cala Homes and Barchester Healthcare are jointly proposing a development of 94 new homes and a 62-bed care home, along with a new road access from Egley Road.

Cala Homes and Barchester Healthcare will be running a public consultation on their plans between now and Thursday 14th April. The consultation will include a virtual exhibition via the project website here, as well as an in-person consultation event at Mayford Village Hall on Thursday 24th March 2022 from 4:30 pm to 7:30 pm.

My view is that this development is wrong for our area, as it would destroy the last strip of green space between Mayford and Woking. Our local green spaces are vital for the future of our communities and must be protected for future generations from development.

I urge local people to engage with the consultation and ensure the potential developers know the strength of feeling locally.

So much for the “deal” that high rise in the town centre was the price to pay for not building on the green belt. As well as meaning that there will be no break in development between Woking and Mayford, this is on the wrong side of a busy road. Locating a care home far from shops and amenities that residents can walk to also feels cruel and wrong.
