Boris Johnson undermines democracy while Woking’s MP stands by

by willforster on 31 August, 2019

This week, the Queen agreed to Boris Johnson’s demand to suspend Parliament and thereby deny democratic debate at one of the most critical times in our country’s history.

The Lib Dems and I think shutting Parliament to force through a No Deal Brexit is an absolutely unacceptable course of action.  This action shows that Boris Johnson and the Conservative Government have no respect for the people of the UK, the sovereignty of Parliament or the democracy they claim to serve.

I welcome Tuesday’s cross-party Church House Declaration that states: “Shutting down Parliament would be an undemocratic outrage at such a crucial moment for our country, and an historic constitutional crisis.  Any attempt to prevent Parliament sitting, to force through a no deal Brexit, will be met by strong and widespread democratic resistance.  We pledge to work together across parties and across our nations to do whatever is necessary to ensure that the people’s voice is able to be heard.”

Although I am disappointed that Woking’s MP appears not to have signed the Church House Declaration – I am not surprised.  Despite Woking voting Remain, our MP voted and backed Leave.  It now seems he supports closing Parliament in order to achieve a chaotic and damaging No Deal Brexit.

The local Lib Dems and I writing to Woking’s MP, calling on him to stand up to Boris Johnson’s decision to suspend Parliament

If you agree with us that our MP should stand up to Boris Johnson and do everything he can to stop a damaging No Deal Brexit, including the option of voting against the Government in a vote of no confidence, please sign our letter here.

Maybe I’ve got this wrong but a no confidence vote is next priority after anti no deal law is implemented. So a promise to act upon this as asked for by Johnson seems OK provided the resistance law is passed but because parliament is prorogued there will not be time for the 14day alternate government period, so such a vote cannot take place until return of parliament.. Oh that is 5 weeks later so by the time of return, a successful no confidence vote or Johnson resignation results in an election after 31st October. So Cummings hoisted by own petard. Condition is that
1 someone has to approach EU to request extension whilst election takes place so a GNU or alternate Tory still necessary if Johnson resigns. EC would be OK with this but beware of Hungary and Czechia.
2 no idiot agrees to an election under the fixed term act.
    Have I got the gist?
