I would like to wish everyone in Woking Borough a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Many of us will be spending the festive period with our families and friends, reminiscing about the year that’s passed, and getting ready to ring in the New Year full of resolutions for 2019.

However, as we celebrate Christmas, it is important we remember that for some – Christmas will be a difficult, and lonely, time.  That even in a Borough and town as busy and prosperous as ours, there are still those who face a bleak Christmas.

I have spent much of my time this year supporting my Mayoral Charity, the York Road Project.  The charity is tireless in their support of homeless people – helping individuals overcome difficulties and put their lives back on track.  Homelessness is an issue all year round, but particularly during the winter months where cold weather can be deadly.  I hope everyone thinks of the less fortunate this Christmas, and support others where they can.

I would also like to encourage people to look out for their neighbours, particularly the elderly and those who live alone.  Woking has an incredible community spirit, and I know that many will reach out to support those going through a difficult time.  A great example of that community spirit is the Woking Lions, who will be hosting their annual Christmas Day lunch at Moorcroft Community Centre.  The event brings together those who would otherwise be alone for an afternoon of food, fun and entertainment – and the Mayoress and I are looking forward to spending part of our day there!

Finally, I would like to give thanks to those who are working throughout Christmas this year.  In particular, to our NHS staff and emergency services, who give up their Christmas to keep our community safe and well – your hard work and efforts are much appreciated.
