Tories backtrack on tips closure plan after resident backlash

by willforster on 21 September, 2017

Conservatives running Surrey County Council have decided to drop their plans to close four Community Recycling Centres after an outcry from thousands of Surrey residents.  However, the County Council now wants to reduce the opening hours of all the tips across Surrey as well as dropping the daily free waste allowance which residents currently enjoy.

Lib Dem Councillors at County Hall do welcome this news that the Tories have backtracked on their unpopular plans to close recycling centres in Bagshot, Cranleigh, Dorking and Warlingham.  However, we remain concerned that they still plan to significantly reduce the opening hours of all of the sites which makes it harder for residents to do the right thing and dispose of their waste responsibly.

I also think that the removal of the daily free waste allowance is a huge mistake and could lead to a large increase in fly-tipping.  My colleagues and I will continue to campaign against cutting the opening hours and to scrap the counter productive charges that the Conservative Council are intent on implementing.
